Here's the link, here's the notes.
Story points are still subject to change at this point but probably not majorly...?
Two Door Cinema Club – Wonderful Life
This one represents Twitch trying to convince Spitfire to join her side and fight against the Quintessons, which somehow happens to work despite Twitch having no reason to think it would.
It also sets a thematic through-line about how important it is to move past your anger, and maybe about understanding where someone else is coming from – or failing to. It could really work for their entire relationship in this story. Great starting song really, sets the tone.
AURORA - Animal
Spitfire singing to Twitch here. The sort of period where Spitfire, who mind you is still completely self-interested despite her change of alliance, has to adjust to playing nice. She’s still an ‘animal’.
“Hunting for love” she starts to enjoy Twitch’s affection and tries to be nicer so Twitch will be more friendly with her. At this point it’s still platonic.
“Looking for a corner where I can’t be found” she can’t go back to the Quintessons after rebelling, so she’s hiding out and sleeping on the streets for a while. She could probably ask Twitch to stay with her, but this also doubles as a metaphor for her hiding her true self because she’s afraid to be vulnerable. For now.
“The weight upon my shoulders felt so divine” she actually starts to enjoy the idea of responsibility, mostly as a goal she can achieve to gain recognition and respect
“Watching every step I take before I die” Spitfire doesn’t really believe this will work out at all. She knows she was sent here to die, and she won’t be welcome back. She decided she’d rather go out as a thorn in their side.
Fitz and the Tantrums – Out Of My League
This time it’s actually more from Twitch’s perspective! She feels like Spitfire is much better than her, at least as a fighter. As she starts to calm down, Twitch worries she might just be a better hero in general.
“If I die don’t wake me; ‘Cause you are more than just a dream” could be read as Twitch thinking if she fails and gets killed along the way, Spitfire is more than capable of filling her position and saving the world. Given the particularly romantic tone of this song, it might also represent where they start to catch feelings.
Grouplove – Tongue Tied
I think this one is mostly to represent Twitch introducing Spitfire to her friends and family, them getting to have some more ‘down to earth’/’slice of life’ bonding outside of hero work, and some level of the “will they-won’t they” they have at this point. They both want it, but Twitch is too afraid to scare Spitfire off and Spitfire is too afraid to show or admit she cares that much; and they’re both afraid that they’re maybe just too different. They’re both willing the other to make the first move.
This is around where Spitfire starts being willing to be more vulnerable with Twitch, admitting she’s been sleeping on the streets and accepting her help. Even though it means Twitch has to see her true form.
TheFatRat – Never Be Alone
“You’re gonna break my heart; You’re gonna tear it apart; No matter what you do; I’ll still be there for you”
Could be either perspective, but I think it’s mostly Twitch because Spitfire gets Sad Machine with a different sentiment. She thinks of Spitfire as the start of problems because she has a more abrasive personality, but still thinks of herself as the ever-patient partner (lover?) who stays through it all and helps her become a better person.
If this applies to Spitfire, she’s thinking that Twitch will break her heart by getting hurt or killed, but she’ll be there for her until the end. Twitch will never be alone. Spitfire will.
They are each entirely aware of their own feelings at this point and maybe only now considering how much the other could emotionally devestate them, in part because this is the first romantic connection either of them has ever had.
Porter Robinson – Sad Machine
You could say working for the Quintessons, she was treated like a machine made to serve a purpose, which maybe made her sad.
This is probably Spitfire’s pov concurrent to Never Be Alone. Where Twitch focuses on the idea of Spitfire hurting her and them working through it; Spitfire, ever the pessimist, worries about Twitch getting killed because she’s less experienced as a fighter.
“This girl who’s slept a hundred years has something after all” maybe she feels like she’s been ‘asleep’ to the value of bonding with someone for her whole life, and now she finally has something of her own.
“I’ll go alone, and never speak of this again” She tells herself that she’ll just go on, never loving again, and telling anyone who asks that she has never loved.
“I depend on you” She’d be lost on this planet without Twitch. She’d be destroyed by the loss.
At some point the thought of “I’ll go alone” might become less “if Twitch dies” and more “I’ll go save the world by myself so she won’t die” – now “I depend on you” makes more sense, as she’ll go alone because she depends on her and wants to save her. “never speak of this again” suggests she refuses to admit the real reason, maybe because she doesn’t want Twitch to know that she thinks she would die. She doesn’t follow this plan because she’s too attached to Twitch to leave her for no good reason.
This is Spitfire struggling with starting to care about anything again. This whole plan started out as her wanting herself and Earth to go out with a bang, but now she has something to look forward to, something to lose.
The Strokes – The Adults Are Talking
Spitfire being pissed at Twitch’s allies at AUTO who don’t trust her. This is slightly less about them and more just about Spitfire, but it soon ends up effecting their relationship.
“I know you think of me when you think of her” the two are so close, especially when doing hero work, that the AUTO heroes expect Spitfire when they expect Twitch.
“I know it’s not, it’s not your fault” is definitely directed at Twitch.
“I don’t want anyone; Always I do, it’s not for you” Spitfire falling back on the idea that she’s only cooperating to save herself and doesn’t care about Earth/humans. Maybe slightly lashing out at Twitch suggesting she doesn’t care about her either.
La Roux – I’m Not Your Toy
“Love, love is like a stubborn youth; That you'd rather just deny” Spitfire is telling herself that her own feelings are a youthful indiscretion that she needs to mature and deny, acknowledging that it’s hard to do because it’s stubborn.
“You don’t want me; You just like the attention” but here the ‘attention’ Spitfire is accusing Twitch of wanting instead of her is the approval of her older allies.
“Love, love hides in a smoky light; I can never find the truth” Trying to convince herself Twitch didn’t care, she looks for proof that’s hard to find, while telling herself it’s just really hidden because she wants it to be the truth.
“I wish I could believe in you” Admitting she still misses her but quickly followed by reminding herself
“Yes, it's all false love and affection”
Part of her falling out might be a desperate ploy to escape caring about Twitch, to go back to having nothing to lose.
Mystery Skulls – Every Note
Can go either way, they both feel pretty betrayed, but Spitfire got I’m Not Your Toy and this song is slower so I guess it’s more Twitch. Probably the weakest choice still here. Almost forgot to add it here because I had so few notes.
Porter Robinson – Cheerleader
“I can tell you’re acting your heart out” Spitfire is pretending she’s gotten over whatever feelings she might’ve had for Twitch, maybe even pretending she never actually care that much at all
“Obsessed like, "I know I can fix him"” Twitch is so, so sure she can get through to Spitfire again
“Her love the type; Where she don’t know where to draw the line” Spitfire choosing to look like Twitch because she thinks she’s attractive is definitely kind of strange. which mind you she doesn’t change during all this.
“Says she hates me ‘cause I’m not hers” Spitfire saying things she doesn’t mean in the heat of anger
“Thought she needed me but I need her” Twitch thought Spitfire needed her to find her place on Earth, and Spitfire thought Twitch needed her training and help. They both realize that they needed each other.
“Don’t you care? I gave you everything” Spitfire changed a lot to try to be a hero, but Twitch chose AUTO over her as if she still wasn’t good enough. Twitch tried to give Spitfire a place in her friend group, even a place in her home when she was stuck on the streets, but she only seemed to care that AUTO wouldn’t trust her. They both feel like the other is ignoring what they did for them.
“Now I feel you even when you’re not there” They got so used to working together that they kind of expect the other to be there.
“It's kinda sad how; It's not your fault you're living in a madhouse” Twitch lamenting Spitfire’s background and how it’s effected her, maybe wanting to blame that for the argument instead of Spitfire… or herself.
“I can’t back down” Both think they’re right, and that they know what’s best for the other.
“Aren't you tired of blending into the background?” Spitfire still being annoyed that Twitch was so attached to following the prophecy, like she’s indistinguishable from the paintings on the walls.
This part all Spitfire VV
“Somehow, I don't even know what she does now” by this point, they’ve each kind of started their own things, and Spitfire realizes she’s fallen out of the loop on what’s going on in Twitch’s life.
“Well, do I wish her the best or do I actually miss her?” Starting to admit, at least to herself, that she isn’t over her feelings,
“She was rooting for me all the time” that Twitch was supportive of her and genuinely wanted to see her improve,
“Her love the type; That makes you dedicate your life” and that the only reason she isn’t still a slave to the Quintessons is because of Twitch. Her friendship made Spitfire change for the better, in ways she’s still holding to even without her around. She’s become a hero, and she hasn’t really changed that. This is her life now. Because of Twitch.
“Thought she needed me but I need her” And she finally really admits to herself that she does still love Twitch.
Mystery Skulls – Hellbent
“Hellbent on making you love me too; though I know it’s not what I’m s’posed to do; I don’t give a damn” Twitch would usually know ‘I can fix her’ isn’t a good idea, but she feels like Spitfire already was ‘fixed’ and she just needs to get back through to her. Spitfire still thinks it’s better to move on because she’s already burned the bridge, but she just can’t.
“I’ll prove you wrong” Spitfire wants to save the world instead of Twitch to prove that they could’ve done it together – without AUTO. Twitch wants to prove that she did care.
“You make me strong“ They both still find some strength in their love and their time together, despite being apart. Twitch especially can almost hear Spitfire’s voice from their training together, helping her in fights. Spitfire is finally fighting for more than just herself.
Madeon – You're On
Maybe you could become my baby; If you just tell me whose side you’re on”
Twitch starts to catch on that Spitfire still cares and wants to convince her to come back to her side
Goo Goo Dolls – Iris
Spitfire and Twitch struggling with being on different sides but still loving each other, the occasional moments where they manage to slip back into their old dynamic and spend some time together again. “I don’t want the whole word to see me; ‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand” because both know that their people would dissapprove of the relationship or even just the feelings “And I don’t wanna go home right now” is probably Spitfire, not wanting to go back to the Quintessons
Two Door Cinema Club – Come Back Home
“So now you're on your own; Won't you come back home?; To see you're not that kind; And find the strength to find the strength to find another way”
The biggest point here, especially with it coming after Spitfire calls the Quintessons ‘home’ in Iris, is Twitch arguing that Spitfire’s real home is with her on Earth.
AURORA – Your Blood
Twitch @ Spitfire. The Quintessons are directly targetting Spitfire now because, being species supremacists, they see her as a bigger threat than Twitch.
“This Earth, whoever was it made for?” Twitch coming back to the idea that Earth can be Spitfire’s home too. It’s not for any group in particular, it’s for whoever calls it home.
“It's after you burn out that you are; Reborn again, reborn again” Spitfire is probably at her lowest point here, which is pretty obvious to Twitch. She hopes she can convince her to give it another try because she has nothing left to lose and nowhere else to go. (+foreshadowing?)
“And maybe if you called out for help; Then I could help you outrun yourself; Comе run again, we'll run again” ‘outrun yourself’ might refer to Twitch viewing Spitfire’s stubborn refusal of help as the real threat to her right now. She just needs to admit she needs help and Twitch will be there for her.
“I refuse to die” might be Spitfire’s response, that she’ll be fine on her own. She’s too stubborn to accept help, but maybe she’s too stubborn to die too.
Loathe & Sleep Token – Is It Really You?
“Face away; Deal with the pain” they both struggle to even be around the other at this point because it’s too painful
“How could they; Deal with the pain?” but they wonder how the other is coping with this pain, each now certain the other cares.
“I knew; It was mine too” each knowing they have some blame in the argument
“Is it really you?” ‘you the one I can never get over’
“Crushed by silent snow” the lack of the warmth of their relationship, the silence between them, is crushing
“Caught in ebb and flow” the currents of their lives slowly dragging them apart
“I’m bleeding out, now you know” the pain of missing the other feels like a fatal wound. Double meaning as this song comes right before Ghosting.
“Let’s search the skies” looking back on the time they spent together, searching for the good memories as something to hold onto
“You and I collide like two stars for a while, You and I” acknowledging their relationship as finite, even brief, but in that time being brilliant, beautiful, and absolutely devestating.
I chose this version because I thought it would flow the best between Your Blood and Ghosting in tone. Also, I had this being Spitfire’s solemn realization that they would have no happy ending as she bleeds out.
Mother Mother – Ghosting
Spitfire, brutally wounded and assuming she’s going to die, trying to apologize to Twitch as her last act, so she won’t be haunted by the lack of closure.
“I've been ghosting, I've been ghosting along; Ghost in your house, ghost in your arms; When you're tossing, when you turn in your sleep; It’s because I’m ghosting your dreams” Spitfire is fully and totally aware that Twitch has loved her the entire time and missed her a lot. And she’s missed her too, so she guesses Twitch has felt the same way she has. But she takes all of the blame because she doesn’t want to leave Twitch feeling guilty.
“I'll leave them folded neat and tidy” Cleaning up the mess she made of their relationship
“So that you'll know I'm out of hiding” so that Twitch knows she isn’t just… well, ghosting her. So she knows why she’ll never see her again.
“Ghost in the world, ghost with no home” tacitly agreeing now that the Quintessons weren’t her home, but still arguing she doesn’t have a home with Twitch, either because she thinks she couldn’t belong with her or because she refused that offer.
“You don't need poltergeists for sidekicks” in light of her failure, admitting Twitch ended up being the one who would be the big hero and save the world.
“Hey, would it be so bad if I stayed?” Spitfire reflecting on her actions and thinking maybe things would’ve been better if she stayed
“I won't put white into your hair” Twitch won’t have to worry about her anymore [and she wouldn’t have had to worry at all if she’d stayed]
“I will be kind and I'll be sweet” Spitfire knows Twitch well enough to know she’ll remember her as a better person than she was, so the stories she’ll tell, the version of her that will ‘go on’ in a way, will be kind and sweet. [and she could’ve been that kinder person herself, could’ve been sweet and romantic with her, if she’d stayed]
“And you don't need me” this one isn’t belittling herself this time. It’s supposed to be uplifting, reassuring. Twitch is strong enough to be the hero. She doesn’t need Spitfire anymore.
Of course that’s not what Twitch wants, not at all, and she finds the sentiment heart breaking.
Calling herself a ghost allthrough-out the song might be Spitfire suggesting that she was doomed to die from the moment she left Twitch, and possibly always destined for this because of her nature. Or maybe she’s expressing that she’s been “ghosting along” because she’s felt like she was just a ghost of who she was with Twitch ever since she left her.
Daft Punk – Face to Face
Unlike canon or our timeline, Spitfire had a bit of a point. Twitch could’ve at least tried to stand up for her more and maybe convinced AUTO to trust Spitfire. Or at least treat her a bit better.
Hearing Spitfire say that Twitch doesn’t need her makes her finally start to reflect and question if she really did nothing wrong here.
“It's not your fault, I was being too demanding” Demanding Spitfire accept the poor treatment from her allies.
“I must admit, it's my pride that made me distant” Despite Spitfire’s accusations, arguably Twitch’s pride was a bigger issue because she could never see Spitfire’s complaints as anything other than her being difficult.
“All because I hoped that you'd be someone different” When Twitch feels like someone doesn’t like her, she has trouble accepting it. Especially an authority figure. But Spitfire, despite her chosen appearance, isn’t Twitch. If she feels unwanted and disrespected, she’s proven herself willing to look for better treatment. Twitch wanted her to be more like her, and hope she could eventually earn their approval. Spitfire just wanted to keep the one person who did appreciate her and leave the disrespect behind.
“There's not much I know about you; Fear will always make you blind” Twitch admitting she might not have entirely appreciated Spitfire as herself. She feared her less agreeable traits would make people dislike her [despite enjoying her personality herself] and she might have tried to ‘sand her down’ to some more palatable, ‘ideal’ Spitfire. She also realizes she doesn’t really know anything about her past with the Quintessons, which is still the vast majority of her life. She doesn’t really understand what she’s been through or how it has and does effect her.
“I turned away, 'cause I thought you were the problem” She just kind of assumed Spitfire was entirely the issue, and while she was willing to forgive her for it the whole time, she never really admitted or even considered she might’ve been in the wrong
“But when I faced you in my blank confusion; I realized you weren’t wrong, was a mere illusion” Twitch was genuinely surprised to see Spitfire managed to make other allies without her, which she can now look back on as proof Spitfire wasn’t ‘too mean’ by this point. She isn’t as nice as Twitch, but she’s clearly learned to get along with humans. She doesn’t need Twitch to ‘tame’ her any more.
“It really didn't make sense; Just to leave this unresolved” Spitfire is already back with her. The argument is forgotten. But Twitch knows that her apology and return were pretty circumstantial, and the fighting would probably bubble back up if she didn’t go ahead and address her issues.
TheFatRat – Let Love Win
This is actually a finale song for a musical story TFR made, and it feels like a fitting ending for this story, too. Their argument doesn’t end with one of them winning; it ends when they let love win. And the war ends when their love wins over evil.
“Don’t give in; to the sad machine” calls back to Sad Machine [in the context of this playlist], Spitfire not giving in to being the sad ‘machine’ the other Quintessons tried to make her into.
