Characters

A golden circle surrounded by four white spikes against a dark blue background.

Characters in the Hero AU and their group loyalty, mostly placed by their affiliation at/near the end of the story.

Note: Instead of the classic DND alignment chart of chaotic-lawful good-evil, i'm using using chaotic-lawful selfless-selfish. I think this is more interesting for most of these characters who would otherwise largely skew to good-neutral. 'Selfish' isn't exactly interchangeable with 'evil' or else this distinction would be useless. For example, Spitfire's selfish motives place her on the side of good in this story.

Terra Defense

Vigilante hero group started by Spitfire and Sunbird.

Sunbird - Tiana
Alter Ego
: Sunbird
Civilian Name
: Tiana Malto
Pronouns
: she/her
Species
: Human
Alignment
: Neutral Selfless
Height
: 148 cm — 4' 10"

The hero foretold to save the Earth from Chalyr rule.

Persona

Despite being a newer hero, Sunbird has already become beloved by allies, civilians, and even some of her enemies for her contagious positivity and friendly demeanor.

Powers

Sunbird has a natural transformation power. Her hummingbird-like wings allow her to hover and fly very precisely. She can summon a weapon which can fire a blast or extend a blade.

Affiliation

Sunbird is very lovable and is good at making friends. Her ultimate goal is to help people, and she'll work with anyone who shares that goal. While she has a fondness for AUTO as they took her in and trained her when she was new, she knew she couldn't be a true member of their team without registering with SPECTER, which she was reluctant to do after they allowed her friend to be kidnapped. In addition, AUTO mistrusted her partner Spitfire and C Sharp mistrusted them, leading Sunbird to decide to make a new team where all of her friends would feel safe and respected.

Prophecy

There was a prophecy about a hero with powers like hers, and after meeting her, AUTO quickly accepted her as the one it foretold. She would later find out that while her transformation was how she was recognized, her skill at making allies and rallying a team was the ability that was foretold to help her win the day.

Mockingbird - Spitfire
Alter Ego
: Mockingbird
Civilian Name
: Spitfire
Pronouns
: she/her
Species
: Chalyr Shapeshifter
Alignment
: Chaotic Selfish
Height
: 148 cm — 4' 10"

The rebellious Chalyr turned defender of Earth.

Persona

Her alter ego has been an open secret for about as long as she's been known in either form. She's known to be brazen and rude, and rarely seems to take any danger seriously.
Despite seeming deeply unreliable, many civilians and plenty of heroes routinely trust her with their lives. She's too proud to back down once she's said she can do something, and she has the ability and skill to back up her bragging.

Powers

Her powers are identical to Sunbird's powers, with the addition of her race's abilities to shapeshift and turn invisible. She usually sticks to forms very similar to Sunbird's because she likes the look.

Loyalty

She's never content to be a pawn, but she doesn't care to be in charge. All she wants is to be respected as an equal. She will leave a group if she feels her effort is wasted on them.
If she has someone else to go to. She can't stand being alone.

She takes great pride in the reputation she's built as a trustworthy hero and enjoys the admiration of the people. She also likes not being hunted as a fugitive. Her motives might be selfish, but they are strong enough to keep her firmly on the side of good, whatever team she joins.

Hero Name

Sunbird gave her the nickname "Mockingbird" when she first showed up impersonating her, which she accepted at first to mock the attempt to shame her, and later because it matched Sunbird's name.

Relation to the Kalat

After she realized her "superiors" would never appreciate her hard work, she slowly became more and more rebellious until she was sent to Earth as a decoy spy, the Judges clearly hoping she would be killed.
She initially sought to prove her skill to them one last time, despite knowing she would be killed even if she succeeded. She hoped it would sour their victory if the problem child was instrumental in it. But Sunbird inadvertently gave her the idea of demonstrating her abilities by turning them against them.

Thrash - Hunter
Alter Ego
: Thrash
Civilian Name
: Hunter Malto
Pronouns
: he/him
Species
: Human
Alignment
: Lawful Neutral

Persona

Powers

Thrash has a small disc which can extend into a full shield, which doubles as a throwable blunt weapon. It always comes back to him, sometimes in ways that seem way too lucky to be anything other than magic.

Nitro - Nick
Alter Ego
: Nitro
Civilian Name
: Nick Gin
Pronouns
: nosself (uses he/him in civilian identity for a while)
Species
: Human
Alignment
: Chaotic Selfish

Persona

Powers

Definitely speed, nos has a speed outlier already. It would be cool to work in a bike theme somehow? I wouldn't know how. Some physical artifact which can transform into a bike?

Affiliation

Nitro wants to be liked and look cool, and nos thought the vigilante Thrash was the coolest around, so when nos got powers nos of course wanted to team up with him. Thrash wasn't sure about it at first, but eventually warmed up to nos.

Rocky Past

Nick was a bully in school, having fallen in with a bad crowd. After becoming a hero, nos developed the courage to stand up to nos old friends, hoping they would see reason. They turned on nos instead.

Nox - Nightshade
Alter Ego
: Nox
Civilian Name
: Nightshade Walkman
Pronouns
: they/them
Species
: Human
Alignment
: Lawful Neutral

Persona

The hero Nox is such a mystery that people aren't sure they're human. There are rumors there's nothing beneath the robotic "suit" and they're just an automaton set loose to protect humanity. Still, they've developed a reputation for being surprisingly gentle.

Powers

Nox personally designed and built the suit that gives them their powers.

Mothwing
Alter Ego
: N/A
Civilian Name
: Mothwing
Pronouns
: it/its
Species
: Cecropian Lepidoptera sapiens
Alignment
: Lawful Neutral

Persona

Mothwing is quiet and secretive, but cares a lot about the people it's close to. It communicates with sign language.

Powers

Mothwing doesn't seem to have any supernatural powers. It is particularly clever and quick to learn, but whether this is supernaturally so or due to its curiosity and dedication is uncertain. It has no interest in nor ability to fight.

It can, of course, fly; but that is natural for its kin. Also like its kin, it can't make nearly enough sounds to communicate verbally like humans do.

Affiliation

After Nightshade freed it from a trap, Mothwing became attached to them and followed them for safety. They set up a place for it in the lab, and it was safe enough to pupate there. It considers Nightshade and Tarantulas to be like family.

The Other Silkmoth-Folk

Its biological family live in an alternate world where the “Lepidopterae sapiens” or silkmoth folk are the dominant species. It is not particularly estranged from them, though they find its interests unusual and bizarre and worry for its safety while it's on "Human Earth". Mothwing itself considers its life here more of a weird inter-dimensional exchange student thing.

Medic

Mothwing has an interest in biology and has elected to become a medic.

Due to the both bug-like and vaguely humanoid anatomy of Chalyr, Mothwing's medical knowledge of its own kind is the closest Earth has to a medic trained for Chalyr. It does want learn more about their unique biology, but it doesn't get many knowledge sources. The Chalyr Kalat are given little education on their own biology if they aren't specifically medics, so Spitfire can't answer most of its questions.

Jawbreaker - Jacoby
Alter Ego
: Jawbreaker
Civilian Name
: Jacoby Locke
Pronouns
: he/him
Species
: Human / Pachycephelosaurus
Alignment
: Lawful Selfless

Persona

The Dino King had protected the city once, so the civilians were no stranger to heroes from the Cretaceous. Jawbreaker is no Tyrannosaurus, though. Where the Dino King was known for being a silent force of nature, the only thing coming from his mouth a jet of flame, Jawbreaker is talkative and friendly. Where the Dino King could hardly control himself and was given a wide berth by villains, civilians, and his allies alike, Jawbreaker has a reputation for being very careful about collateral damage, even reigning in his hero partner Aftermath.

Powers

He can turn into a pachycephelosaurus (mostly) at will. It can start to happen accidentally when he gets too anxious, scared, or angry; so, just overwhelmed in general. It's a sort of self defense mechanism. This form also has unique abilities matching it, like the sort of strong blast with the headbutt he has in canon.

Affiliation

Jacoby's own uncle warned him against trusting SPECTER and joining AUTO, so for a good while him and Aftermath were just an un-affiliated duo. When his friends started a team, he was happy to join. A bit relieved. There's safety in a herd, after all.

"Secret" Identity

You'd think a full-body transformation would make it easier for him to hide his identity than say someone like Sunbird. But his uncle is famously known to have a similar power, so Jacoby was always a suspect for the civilian identity of Jawbreaker. And given the sometimes hard to control nature of this power, it was only a matter of time before he was found out. Half the heroes his age in the city quickly came to his aide.

Aftermath - Matt
Alter Ego
: Aftermath
Civilian Name
: Matt Stunt
Pronouns
: he/him
Species
: human
Alignment
: Chaotic Neutral

Persona

Aftermath is known to be a somewhat more reckless hero, his hero partner Jawbreaker often having to remind him to reel it in. He tries to, though, so it's clear he means well. He's quick to jump to his friends' defense whenever needed. Or whenever he thinks it's needed.

Powers

Some kind of transformation, keeping the vague football look he has idk. Some spikes. Originally had it as a mech suit?

Affiliation

He doesn't take it all that seriously. They're all heroes, what does it matter what team they're in? When he eventually joins the Terra Defense team, he very clearly thinks of it more like a friend group. He cares about them, of course, but he treats it more like a sports team than a group with a unique identity and goal.

Dad

Aftermath isn't known for his caution, but he's very careful to keep his dad out of the loop on his hero status. He's sure he'd recognize him, hero transformation or not, so he just tries to avoid him while doing hero work.
He doesn't want him to worry.

C Sharp - Hazel
Alter Ego
: C Sharp
Civilian Name
: Hazel Walkman
Pronouns
: she/her (she/they as C Sharp)
Species
: Human
Alignment
: True Neutral
Height
: 170 cm — 5' 9"

Persona

C Sharp is very outgoing and friendly, but not much is known about her and she's not seen much. She's rumored to ally with old villains on occasion, which further mars her reputation. All combined with her (very emotive) screen visor hiding her eyes and her "demonic" hologram wings and tail, the general population doesn't trust her as a hero.

Powers

While powers like super strength and electrokinesis could dominate the front lines, C Sharp tends to prefer using their technopathy and flight to coordinate teammates and sabotage their enemies.

Affiliation

C Sharp is staunchly opposed to SPECTER and as such, keeps their allies in AUTO at arm's length. She prefers to align herself with the Reformers, alongside her adopted father, but she has some gripes with their choice of allies sometimes, too. Especially after one of them betrayed her close friend.

Val

Hazel is plural. C Sharp is actually a fusion of her and her headmate, Val. Their fusion gets the holograms and the ability to fly from Val. This is also why C Sharp's voice is different from Hazel's, which influenced the choice as it seemed like a good way to obfuscate their identity. Despite both headmates using she/her pronouns, their fusion uses she/they as a nod to the fact that she's two people.

Splitting

Hazel's powers awakened when she was kidnapped, wrongfully imprisoned, and experimented on by a lab directly under SPECTER. During this time, she found out she could connect to wireless signals with her mind, eventually using this to reach out to her close friend Tiana who had become a hero in the time since her capture.

Terratronus
Alter Ego
: N/A
Civilian Name
: Terratronus
Pronouns

Species
: Xenobot
Alignment

Persona

Terratronus is a massive prediction engine left on the Earth by the Xenobots to help whatever future species would evolve there defeat the Chalyr when they inevitably return for the planet. She takes this job rather seriously, but not so much so that she won't be friendly with the heroes. She has been lonely for many, many years.

Powers

She can predict many possible futures, an ability she uses to help guide her heroes to fulfill the path she sees as the best outcome.

Affiliation

Her given motivation is to protect the Earth and its now inhabitants from Chalyr takeover.

Puppet

The "base" she resides within is her true body, and the puppet she uses to engage with the humans is just that; a puppet, made to make her seem more personable so the humans might trust her more.

AUTO

The 'legacy' hero team in town.

Persona

Shard is a quippy, laid-back vigilante

Powers

Hover, arm cannon blaster, speed

Affiliation

Only masquerading as a solo vigilante, Shard is secretly allied with the hero group AUTO.

Apprentice

Having been the one to find her, Shard got the honor of being the mentor to the hero of prophecy Sunbird. They were initially worried about their ability to fulfill this role, but they eventually got attached to her.

Rumors

Due to some similarities in their power sets, Shard is rumored to have been related to the late hero Bumblebee. Others think his powers are all derived from technology and he might just be a copy.

Grim Locke "The Dino King"
Alter Ego
: King of the Dinos / Dino King
Civilian Name
: Grim Locke
Pronouns
: he/him
Species
: Human / Tyrannosaurus Rex
Alignment
: ??

Persona

Powers

He can turn into a T-Rex. Which can also breathe fire. Unfortunately, he has issues with controlling this transformation in part due to trauma.

Affiliation

Before retiring from hero work, he was part of AUTO. He's still technically allied with them, but they wouldn't call in him unless the end times were upon them. They know his problems, and they don't want to put him through that.

He's still invited to their holiday parties.

Family

After the death of his sibling, he took in his orphaned nephew, Jacoby.

Megatron
Alter Ego

Pronouns
: he/him
Species
: Human
Alignment
: True Neutral

Persona

Megatron is a looming presence that strikes terror into the hearts of most people.

Powers

Hover, something paralleling the cannon?

Affiliation

Despite his change of allegiance (and much to the chagrin of the former teammates he betrayed), he's still better known for his time as leader of the Reformers. Under him, they were far more active and often staged destructive, even violent, protests against SPECTER and by association their allies in AUTO.
He still tries to look out for his old allies where he can, including not revealing their civilian identities to SPECTER under the guise they kept them secret even from each other. With the exception of Starscream, who he considered simply too dangerous to leave free.

Mentorship

While he's too busy to be the direct mentor to the birds,

Bumblebee
Alter Ego
: Bumblebee
Civilian Name
: ph
Pronouns
: he/him
Species
: Human
Alignment
: Neutral Selfless

Persona

Bumblebee was a well-loved hero known for being snarky with villains and gentle with civilians. His passing has further softened his image; most people recall him almost being saint-like when asked about him. Even some of his old enemies remember him fondly, in part because he would endanger himself to save them if need be.

Powers

Affiliation

Aside from Optimus himself, Bee was considered the face of AUTO. He is still their poster boy. He was young when he first joined, perhaps a teenager himself.
It's said Optimus was like an older brother to him, and he seemed to get along with everyone there really well. Some say it hasn't been the same since his loss.

Passing

Bumblebee was tragically found dead at a rather young age, having died during a very mysterious mission for AUTO. They say that he did manage to accomplish his goal, and his loss, while tragic, was not in vain, but the exact nature of his mission was never made public.

The Reformers claim that his civilian identity being revealed, as was required by SPECTER, was part of what led to his death. Despite having fought against him, they consider it just as much of a tragedy as a loss of their own, arguably made worse by AUTO's own "allies" causing it.

Reformers

Legally classified as villains, the Reformers are vigilantes who oppose the policies of SPECTER for various reasons. They used to stage elaborate "riots" of sorts under their previous leader.

Mixtape
Alter Ego

Species
: Human
Alignment
: Lawful Neutral

Persona

Mixtape is the silent watcher of the city. It seems they know everything that goes on in the city.

Affiliation

Mixtape joined the Reformers because they believe people with powers should be able to be open about them without fear of being subjugated by SPECTER.

Family

Has two adopted children, Hazel and Nightshade.

Transformations

Mixtape has different power sets associated with each member of the system.

Soundwave

Can connect to devices with his mind? TFP cable thing? Telekinesis

Laserbeak

Flight, fast, long range attacks, good distracter

Frenzy

Melee combat, tankier

Ravage

Starscream
Alter Ego
: Starscream
Civilian Name

Persona

Affiliation

Starscream joined the Reformers because she fears how SPECTER subjugates himself and others with powers, and how much worse it would be if they were uncontested. She is fairly paranoid, and sometimes it makes her self centered, but she usually tries to look out for her allies.

Persona

Artemis is the daughter of Karen Croft, head of SPECTER. As such, she is expected to behave herself. She is deadly serious and somewhat standoffish.

Powers

While having no transformation, she is surprisingly agile and resilient in her base form. She can also connect to the Internet with her mind, much like C Sharp.

Affiliation

She is loyal to her mother and SPECTER, believing vigilantes are too dangerous to be allowed to run free. She does respect the vigilante C Sharp for preferring to take less destructive routes to de-escalating conflict, and has tried to convince her to join SPECTER's HEAT program.

The Coma

She was injured in a fight between a vigilante and a villain at a young age, and put into a coma for many years. She was said to have been much more friendly and outgoing before the accident.
There are rumors her awakening was only thanks to unscrupulous experimentation that affected her personality.

Just wanted to note for myself that Dill's dad, probably Breakdown's brother, is a planned character I just haven't fleshed out yet. Since Dill is largely a foil to Nitro, his dad is very proud of him. This also fits with the idea that the Stunts, while being villains, tend to genuinely care about their family. Breakdown isn't unique in loving his son, just in keeping his son out of the "family business".
